How is Venetian lace made?
• Entirely by hand using only a needle, thread, and a supportive paper or parchment pattern—without any underlying fabric base.
• Artisans drew intricate floral, scroll, or geometric designs onto strong paper or parchment.
• In the next step a double thickness of thread was laid along the drawn outlines and lightly tacked (basted or couched) through the paper pattern to anchor it.
• Workers then used fine linen or cotton thread with various needle stitches (such as buttonhole and decorative filling stitches) to fill in the solid parts of the design.
• For raised styles like "gros point", the outlines were padded with extra thread bundles and densely covered over with raised buttonhole stitches to create a carved, three-dimensional effect. Motifs were then joined with delicate thread bars (brides) sometimes even adorned with tiny loops or stars (picots).
• Once completed, the tacking stitches on the back of the paper pattern were cut, releasing the finished needle lace from the temporary backing.
• The whole process would take weeks or months depending on the size of the lace.
