Pretty as a picture! These doilies were traditionally created by women in Australia before, during or after the second world war for their "glory box" that contained mostly hand embroidered linen for their wedding and married life.
Designs were varied, inspired by garden and wildflowers, ethnic influence, like Dutch, Mexican, Oriental, etc. Popular were also pets, native animals, plants, everyday objects, such as teacups, flower baskets, traditional themes such as the "crinoline lady" or English cottage/landscapes.
The skills and the desire to craft embroidered doilies are mostly gone for good, so they are becoming increasingly rare and sought after by collectors, decorators and for sewing, slow stitching or multimedia collage art projects.
